Bharti Airtel has tied up with the world’s largest money transfer company Western Union for its mobile money transfer services. Western Union has signed a deal with 35 global GSM-based mobile operators for this service, with Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal heading the group, which includes global telecom players such as MTN, Orange, Orascom, Smart, Telenor, VimpelCom amongst others.
This will help consumers in India get money from their associates abroad without holding any bank account. This is how it will work— a Vodafone customer in UK would make a cash payment of say, $100, to Vodafone to be transferred to a Bharti subscriber in India on the Western Union network. The Indian subscriber will receive an SMS informing him of the transaction and he can then approach the Bharti outlet with proof of identity and collect the sum after paying a small service charge.
